Neville reminded me last night that Darius' preschool is closed today. I have the closure on the home calendar, my work calendar, my blackberry calendar... and still it didn't even register until Neville said that he had a ton of meetings on Friday and wouldn't be able to watch Darius... and wanted to know if I was planning on watching him or if we need to call in for reinforcements (aka his semi-retired father).
How could the school possibly be closing for Staff Development Day? How could I possibly be so together to frickin write the date down on every calendar I manage and still forget about it until the night before?
So at 11pm last night, after I checked my work calendar and miraculously had not a single meeting, I emailed my boss. I'm taking a last-minute vacation day. Other than my project plans not getting updated (as I always do that on Fridays), there would be no impact at work. My out-of-office message is on my work email.
When I woke up this morning, Darius and I made a pancakes for breakfast. I have some errands to run this morning before we head to Natural Bridges beach in Santa Cruz to take an adventure with the tide pools. Darius is finally a great swimmer and a good enough listener where I feel comfortable at the beach. Not take-a-nap-under-the-sun comfortable like my parents often did when we went to the beach when I was a kid. But, sit-on-a-blanket-and-watch-him-run-up-and-down-the-beach comfortable.
To really have a vacation day, I even turned off the email flowing to my BlackBerry (something I only learned about after I helped a co-worker set up his BB). Darius and I are having an impromptu bonding day. And nothing is gonna get in the way of it.
