We survived the first month of school! Darius is adjusting well to his new class, his two teachers, and the much longer, more rigorous learning environment.
I, on the other hand, have been cranky and acting out.
Go figure.
Neville is taking Darius to school in the mornings on his way to work. It's great for me to get them out of the house by 7:45 and be able to get focused on work right away. I have to leave the house at 3pm to pick him up. Yes, his kindergarten is an all day one. Yes, I purposely picked a school that way. No, he's not dying from being in school all day. I knew from the beginning that I'd have to be able to drop work in the late afternoons to be with Darius.
I just didn't realize that I'd have to drop everything else.
There's snack and then homework. Yes, he's in kindergarten and he has homework. Yes, I purposely picked a school that way. No, he's not dying from having to do 2 worksheets and read for 15 minutes. Since Darius is just a budding reader, it't not like I sit him at his desk and tell him to do his homework. He needs a little help. Or a lot of help. Homework, which is supposed to take 30 minutes, has been taking over an hour. But I have a plan to curb that and get my head-in-the-clouds son back on track.
Then there's getting a meal on the table a whole hour before our before-school routine. Darius has is going to bed a full hour earlier than in preschool to be able to get up at 7:00am for school. So everything moved up an hour. And again, while he is adjusting fine, I've been a ball of stress come 5pm.
So we are surviving. Not quite thriving. And the kid isn't telling me he hates school or thinks I'm mean for making him do his homework. So I'd say we've got a solid B+ in the whole work, life, kindergarten balancing act. Now the overachiever in me just has to find a way to make that a solid A.
