Judging by my Twitter stream, Darius must be in one of the few school districts starting today. It's damn early. Considering that school gets outs on May 31st, it's not so bad either.
Today, Darius started a new school. We've decided (at least temporarily) to put him into our local public school. It's a great school with a high API score. And it doesn't come with the hefty price tag -- money that is currently being spent on the nanny that cares for Cooper. But we are still nervous about the change.
Entering the classroom today with 30 kids - 10 more than at his private school - with a teacher who seriously looks like Viola Swamp, made me question our decision. The teacher barked at all of the parents to take the kids backpacks home saying "There's NO NEED for backpacks in the second grade!" There was barely enough room for all the desks which made me wonder how this was all going to work out.
Then again, walking to school this morning? Awesome.
Getting to play sports and have extracurricular activities since he won't have an hour of homework each night? Priceless.
Not having to put up with cranky Robyn who can barely juggle work, homework, dinner, and a crawling baby every afternoon? Fan-frickin'-tastic.
The private school doesn't start for another two weeks. Until then, we're giving it a trial run. With our mind and our eyes wide open. I'm hoping it works out for the best. But I can't say for sure that this is the right fit. Not now. Not yet.
One thing is for sure. Cooper is gonna miss having his big brother around.
